EDUCATOR, CEO, SPEAKER, CONSULTANT and SELF CARE TEACHER

Hi, I’m Trina

Throughout my years in education, I’ve seen a significant shift in how I approach self-care. When I first started teaching, the idea of self-care was almost like a foreign concept, easily lost in the hustle of preparing lessons, grading assignments, writing IEP’s (Individualized Education Plans), attending meetings, and all of the other endless responsibilities of being a special education teacher.

I was overwhelmed, anxious and tired. All too often, my evenings and weekends were spent on the computer for work. (I’m sure you can relate). This resulted in the beginning of me developing some serious health challenges.  When I got diagnosed with high blood pressure and chronic arthritis, it really hit home. As a teacher who’s always put everything into my work, I had to stop and take a hard look at how I was living. This wasn’t just a health scare; it was a loud and clear message that I needed to start taking better care of myself. So, I started making small changes here and there.

Continued…

But, as time went by and I gained more experience in the field, I began to understand how crucial it is to look after my own well-being. Self-care transitioned from something I saw as optional, almost a treat, to an essential part of my life as an educator.

Now, when I talk about self-care, I’m referring to more than just physical health. It’s about maintaining my mental and emotional wellness as well. I’ve started to embrace practices like mindfulness meditation, keeping up with regular physical activity, and making sure I set aside time just for myself. Adopting this more rounded approach to self-care has not only improved my life outside of school but has also made a noticeable difference in my work. In the classroom, I find myself more engaged, patient, and full of energy. (On most days, anyway!)

Learning to balance the time and energy I give to my students with the time I devote to caring for myself has been an evolving process, one that continues to grow and change with every school year.  Incorporating self-care practices into my life has been a GAME CHANGER!!

(I am not sure where to place this but I would like to share it)

You might be wondering, “What if massages, facials, yoga, and traveling aren’t my cup of tea?” That’s completely fine. These activities have been my go-to for relaxation, but balanced living is much more personalized than that. Let’s work together to find what clicks with YOU. We’ll explore and select the tools and resources that suit your unique lifestyle, helping you lead your best life. This way, you’ll be able to bring your best self every day – to your students, your colleagues, your family, and most importantly, to yourself.

Testimonials

What Teachers are Saying

“Ms. Horton I can’t thank you enough for your vision… ICare4Teachers! I appreciate you thinking of me. I enjoyed myself this past weekend at Dine & Design. Though I enjoyed small conversations with my fellow colleagues I was in deep thought painting my canvas and trying to stay in the lines. It was truly a day well spent and a much-needed ME moment.”

I truly enjoyed the painting activity at Dine and Design. I’m looking forward to the next event! I didn’t realize how much I needed this. Shoutout to Ms. Horton!!!!”

“I Care 4 Teachers does an amazing job with guiding and supporting you with everyday task. Although easier said than done, I am learning to take time for myself outside of the school. I have been encouraged through this program to ALWAYS make sure I do something for myself no matter how big or small it is and even if it’s just 5 minutes it’s 5 minutes of my OWN time.”
